Nerthus
08:54
|
|||
In the holy grove, the ceremony begins
The image of mother earth is passing by
She is Nerthus, the pure and untouchable
She speaks in minds like spirits fly
I'm the embodiment of Holy Power
Awe-inspiring and held in such great esteem
Curious eyes would meet their fatal hour
For I'm concealed, 'neath a veil, like a hidden dream
The cart goes slow, they beat the drum
As song and chant clear the way
Clear the way!
My tears cause floods drowning hope or tomorrow
My fury makes the ground tremble with fear
Yet I'm the one to make your precious crops grow
You harvest them before the winter's here
I wield the code for life inside the seed
Controlling soil, enabling plants to feed
I, Nerthus, command plants to wither and die
Death, it feeds life, answering questions why
See tribes surrounded by the salt of the sea
And those who live by the riverside
Rival each other, yet they worship me
For I am Nerthus, I'm the undenied
The day has come for her authority
Rejoice, pay tribute by festivity!
For she is balance, clean, without a stain
Divides the laws 'tween sacred and profane
By the hands of the condemned shall be cleansed my veil
Purity in the well, at the bog ends their tale
A ligature to bond with the divine
I am Nerthus, and you are mine!

The forest is the temple
The oak a holy tree
The Frisian defense
The Roman enemy
The marshlands for them
No place to be
For us it is a sanctuary
Baduhenna, Baduhenna
This is the land overrun by the south
This is the eagle that preys on our soul
Splendour of falsehood is blinding our hate
Out to devour us, living and whole
Baduhenna, Baduhenna
She is the one that will make us stand up
Firm our grip round the spears in our hands
Time to oppose all the powers that be
And gather the force to free our lands
Curse Olennius! He who stamps on us
Baduhenna's call -- She demands his fall
Curse Olennius! He's the scourge of us!
Drive him out and let Baduhenna rule
First they come and take the hide
(And then) they will say it won't suffice
(And then) they will confiscate the field
But there's no use to talk
'gainst a sword and shield
In the end they enslave the wife and child
'til there's nothing to yield!
Curse Olennius! He who stamps on us
Baduhenna's call -- She demands his fall
Curse Olennius! He's the scourge of us!
Drive him out and let Baduhenna rule
Hark, Frisian men:
There's a holy voice
And it speaks and says "No More!"
The antler grants us vigilance
The claw gives predatorial zeal
The horn will pierce armour and shield
The tusk through flesh from shin to heel
We're heading to Olennius' camp
There's only one solution:
We will quench their thirst for tributes
With our retribution!
And lo, they fled to safer grounds
Castellum Flevum, the Roman fort
But it shall not withstand the wrath
Of Baduhenna's horde!
A siege ensues, the horde it is
Repelled by forces of might
But only just, and reinforcements
Soon come into sight
As Romans march to marshy ground
Eternal night is found
Morning comes, but not...
...For the oppressor's force
For the adversary
In pursuit of our throats
But sinking to the knee
Baduhenna takes life of those
Defiling her sanctuary
Hark, Frisian men:
There's a holy voice
And it speaks and says "No more!"

Taxandria, a distant memory
Sandraudiga, an earthen deity
The wind blows over broken bones
Of hands that carved your name in stones
Of hands that offered manyfold
Tributes when your name was called
The iron paints the earth blood red
Fertility springs from the dead
Chalk is white, and black the night
Your name whirls in the air, like birds in flight
They tried to wipe you out
And temples were destroyed
And evil tongues they cast
Her name into the void
Your worshippers have turned to dust
You're missing, presumed dead
But as persistent like the wind
Your sands remain blood red
Sandraudiga
Your cornucopia
The gift from heathen days
Your silent pride will stay

The Rhine it splits the territories
An encampment it lies right here
It's large and it's called Burginatum
Horses and legions stationed there
The prefect of the Emperor's guard
Named Titus Flavius Constans
Dedicated to a strange goddess
An altar made by craftman's hands
While some were confused by this
Homage to a foreign goddess
It's wise to see and understand that
Local deities are not less
Vagda, Vagda, Vagdavercustis!
Blessed be this shining armour
Blessed be these sharp lances
Blessed be military virtue
Protectress of Wardancers
Let's dance!
Centuries pass and events leave their secrets
Left as the shards in the ground
Gone is the glory of temple and worship
Answers that can not be found
(One could) Speculate about an enemy raid
Or a tune with a Christian sound...
Germanic goddess of war
The soil draws your name in time
May the mystery of your face
Be unearthed to see you shine
And tell stories now still untold
May your bronze petals unfold
Vagda, Vagda, Vagdavercustis!

Nehalennia

When the ship sails at night (ghosts haunt you)
When the ship sails by day (waves beat you)
When the wind sweeps by (screams loudly)
When the sails resist force (tears forming)
When the salt dries the eyes (tears leave you)
When the deck rocks the legs (false movement)
When the clouds obscure the stars (misjudgement)
When the doubts rise like tides (uncertain)
When the cold sets in (long-lasting)
I call upon aloud her name -- Nehalennia
A resqueing force in a sea of sorrow
Honour today, for the sake of tomorrow
Hardship and misery wallow off shore
The Dogs of the Sea, they will come back for more
In sight of the Tempest's Eye, it is when
The sailors scream out in despair
Invoke Nehalennia, ask her to heed
As they mutter and beg her to care
A woman she dwells at the shoreline
And the days are getting late
Could be she is newly widowed
And she dwells upon such a fate
Blistering hands still pull the ropes
As life hangs by a thread
Shipwrecked, maybe not today
Perhaps, we're fortunate
When the ship sails at night (ghosts haunt you)
When the ship sails by day (waves beat you)
I call upon aloud her name -- Nehalennia
I shall sculpt thee an altar, fair-faced goddess
Enthroned with the prow at thy feet
And thou keepeth the Dog of the Sea in thy lap
From its rabid attacks we are freed
One day we'll be gone, and the sea swallows all
Even temples may vanish with thee
But one day time decides to unveil them again
All comes back, like the Dogs of the Sea.

Hella
09:46
|
|||
These misty hills
We climb the burial mound
Offerings for the deceased
Lie scattered around
We pass a winding path
To fields of reed below
They speak to me in words
Their meaning I don't know
And as the water sounds
A bridge comes into sight
And at the edge below
The river roars with might
The bridge only the dead may cross
Not meant for me to see
Weighted by gold and guard
But I'm in Hella's company
Proceeding on a sandy path
She gestures welcoming
A "Path of Hel" is what it's called
Toward the "Heathland's Sting"
For there lies sharpness all around
To pierce through dead men's feet
As they wander toward crossroads
Some of them shall bleed
On the way to the Well of Judgement
In order to be free
At the High Seats of the Gods
And by the roots of the Earth Tree
Hella's Realm is here
Where all streams are born
Where all souls come to gather
The Brave, the Wicked, the Forlorn
The evil souls without their guard
Compelled to wallow through torment
They cross the river of War Blades
Which flows so soft, cuts without end
To the other side of Gjöll
Up north to Nifelheim, so cold
Stands Hella's fortress in the mist
Where destinies of souls unfold
The murderers, the thieves and crooks
At bloody streams, 'neath poison rain
Inflict their due upon themselves
Until they sense what's right again
Hella's land, where they resent
The things they didn't feel
The oathless and the honourless
Be purified through harsh ordeal.
